Effect of three different anaesthetic agents on the postoperative production of cardiac troponin T in paediatric cardiac surgery

Abstract: Midazolam, propofol, and sevoflurane appear to provide equal myocardial protection in paediatric cardiac surgery when using cTnT as a marker of myocardial damage.

“…However, troponin levels were nearly twice as high in patients receiving midazolam and propofol, suggesting a lack of power. 152 Experimental studies supported beneficial effects of benzodiazepine antagonists. Flumazenil protected cardiac myozytes from hypoxic damage via the PKC, ROS, and K ATP channel prosurvival axis.…”

“…In addition, cTnT levels before cardiovascular surgery predicted postoperative survival. Finally, perioperative troponin measurements have been used as a gauge of therapeutic success with a variety of intraoperative protocols (142)(143)(144)(145)(146)(147)(148).…”

“…While numerous laboratory investigations have shown that anaesthetic preconditioning is an important protective mechanism in a variety of species and tissues [1][2][3][4], the results of studies performed in humans have been more equivocal. While there are several studies reporting a beneficial effect with respect to myocardial cell damage [5][6][7], myocardial function [8,9], and improved outcome [10,11], other investigators have been unable to confirm these promising findings [12][13][14][15]. In studies where the volatile anaesthetic is given continuously (i.e.…”
