Effect of three Juvenile hormone analogues on insects from different orders

Abstract

Three Juvenile hormone analogues (JHAS): ZR‐777, 5 E (prop‐2‐ynyl 3,7,11 trimethyl‐[2 E, 4 E]‐dodecadienoate), Hydroprene or ZR‐512 (ethyl [E,E]‐3,7,11‐trimethyl‐2,4‐dodecadienoate) and ZR‐520, 4 E (ethyl 11‐methoxy‐3,7,11 trimethyl‐[2 E, 4 E]‐2,4‐dodecadienoate) were tested against the following insects: Periplaneta americana, (Orthopt.) Galleria mellonella, (Lepidopt.) Tenebrio molitor, (Coleopt.) and meat fly, Sarcophaga cergyrostoma (Dipt.) under laboratory conditions. There were morphological abnormalities in all insects, with the exception of the nymphs of Periplaneta. High doses of ZR‐777 and ZR‐512 (10% and 1%) killed all tested larvae and pupae of Tenebrio and Galleria. While the other doses increased the percentage of pupation by the decrease of concentration. A correlation was found between the concentration and the weight of pupae in the case of Tenebrio, this weight decreased with the increase of the concentration. Only very low concentration tested (0.001%) increased the weight of pupae than the control. No correlation was found in the case of Galleria between weight of pupae and concentration. While JHA tested decreased the longevity of pupal stage in Tenebrio, they increased the longevity of tested larvae of Periplaneta, Galleria and Sarcophaga and the longevity of pupae in the case of Galleria. In the case of Sarcophaga, there was correlation between the weight of pupae and the concentration, the weight decreased with the increase of the concentration. No adult was emerged from treated larvae at all concentrations tested. Zusammenfassung Wirkung von 3 Juvenilhormonanalogen auf Insekten unterschiedlicher Ordnung Es wurden die Schabe, Periplaneta americana, die Wachsmotte, Galleria mellonella, der Mehlkäfer, Tenebrio molitor, und die Fleischfliege, Sarcophaga cergyrostoma, mit den 3 Juvenilhormonanalogen (JHA): ZR 777, ZR 512 und ZR 520 behandelt. Bei allen genannten Arten, mit Ausnahme der Nymphen von Periplaneta, ergaben sich morphologische Abnormitäten. Hohe Dosen von ZR 777 und ZR 512 (10% und 1%) tüteten alle Larven und Puppen von Tenebrio und Galleria ab, während andere Dosierungen das Verpuppungsprozent (bei Abnahme der Dichte) erhühten. Bei Tenebrio nahm das Puppengewicht mit zunehmender Konzentration ab. Nur bei sehr niedriger Konzentration (0,001%) wurde es erhöht. Keine Beziehung zwischen Puppengewicht und Konzentration fand sich bei Galleria. Während die JHA die Lebensdauer der Puppen bei Tenebrio verminderte, verlängerte sie die Entwicklungsdauer der Larven bei Periplaneta, Galleria und Sarcophaga sowie die Lebensdauer der Puppen von Galleria. Bei Sarcophaga nahm das Puppengewicht mit steigender JHA‐Konzentration ab. Bei allen geprüften Konzentrationen entwickelten sich aus den behandelten Larven keine Adulten.
