Effect of TiO2 nanoparticles incorporation on antibacterial properties and shear bond strength of dental composite used in Orthodontics

Abstract: Introduction: Plaque accumulation and bond failure are drawbacks of orthodontic treatment, which requires composite for bonding of brackets. As the antimicrobial properties of TiO2 nanoparticles (NPs) have been proven, the aim of this study was to evaluate the antimicrobial and mechanical properties of composite resins modified by the addition of TiO2 NPs. Methods: Orthodontics composite containing 0%, 1%, 5% and 10% NPs were prepared. 180 composite disks were prepared for elution test, disk agar diffusion tes… Show more

“…However, the mean shear bond strength of composite containing 10% NPs was lower than that of the control group. 43 Titanium dioxide (TiO 2 ) nanoparticles exhibit better antibacterial properties compared to chlorhexidine. Moreover, TNPs are suggested for preventing white spot formation because bacteria are less likely to develop resistance against TNPs.…”

“…Unfortunately, the presence of titanium dioxide NPs resulted also in loss in the shear bond strength in comparison to unmodified composite. Finally, the addition of up to 5% of TiO2 helped to achieve a compromise between bacterial growth reduction and loss in the shear bonding strength [102]. During the orthodontic treatment with a fixed appliance, the caries lesions are commonly spotted, especially next to orthodontic brackets.…”
