Effect of tool parameters on mechanical properties, temperature, and force generation during FSW

Abstract: The welding tool parameters play a critical role in obtaining weld strength during friction stir welding. In this investigation, the effect of welding tool parameters such as pin and shoulder diameter and pin height on the axial and traverse forces and also temperature of welding of AA5083 alloy was investigated. A specially designed dynamometer was used to measure the welding tool forces. Then, the mechanical properties of the welds were characterized using tensile tests. Moreover, macrostructure of welds was… Show more

“…Dealing with the FSW process, most of the previous research works are focused on linear welding of plates (such as lap, butt and T‐joint welds) for different alloys 3–15 . However, reliable and practical usage of this technique for joining cylinders, pipes and tubes requires a suitable and optimized orbital FSW on cylindrical shells.…”

“…A review of the above-mentioned aspects of welding can be found in previous studies. [1][2][3][4][5][6] The welding process is accompanied by a change in the microstructure of the material and the appearance of residual stress. The residual stress as well as the microstructural change has a significant combined effect on fatigue crack propagation (eg, Fratini et al 7 ).…”

“…Friction stir lap welding of dissimilar alloys such as Al-to Al, Al-to-steel, Al-to-Ti or Al-to-Cu is also of enormous significance in many industries and many research activities have been done for investigating such dissimilar weldments (Abdollah-Zadeh et al, 2008;Akbari et al, 2016;Aliha et al, 2016Aliha et al, , 2017Aonuma & Nakata, 2011;Jiang & Kovacevic; In this paper, we focus on an example of friction stir lap welding (FSLW) of one metallic alloy to another with considerably higher melting temperature -FSLW of Al-steel and Al-Ti. It is well known that fusion welding of Al-to-steel and AlTi is very challenging (Taban et al, 2010;Liedl et al, 2011).…”
