To analyse and simulate the dynamic responses of the gearbox in a vehicle–track system, a three-dimensional vehicle–track coupled dynamics model for high-speed trains has been developed in this study with a comprehensive consideration of the transmission system. Using this dynamics model, the coupling effects between the gearbox housing and its connected components were analysed. Based on the dynamic results, the dynamic stress field of the gearbox housing can be obtained using the finite element methods. The model outputs were successfully validated through comparisons with field test data. Following model validation, the dynamic stress and its distribution throughout the gearbox housing were further investigated under different excitations, including track irregularities, wheel polygonal wear and flatness. The results demonstrate a significant increase in the stress levels of the oil level window aperture and the bottom face of the housing, which coincides with the location of cracks that are formed in the gearbox housing during frequent vehicle operation. While a specific case has been studied here, the proposed dynamics model can be applied to related dynamic assessments, such as vibration or suspension parameter analyses, as well as to stress analyses of any rail vehicle transmission system to guide the maintenance and design.

By grasping the vibration characteristics of the wheelset, the service state of the wheel can be reversely deduced. In this paper, the dynamic model of a rigid–flexible coupling vehicle system, considering wheelset flexibility and axle box flexibility, is established, and a novel resonance excitation loading method for axle box is proposed. Through this method, the vertical force of the wheel‐rail and the resonance response of the axle box vibration under different rigid–flexible combinations of wheelset axle box are obtained. The resonance response characteristics of the axle box of the wheelset and the main factors affecting the resonance characteristics are analyzed. Results show that the bending mode of the wheelset considerably affects the vibration characteristics of the axle box. The mass, the moment of inertia around the x‐axis, and the position of the center of gravity of the axle box also greatly affect the resonance characteristics of the wheel‐to‐axle box.

A bearing‐vehicle‐track coupling dynamic model is built in this paper and the validity of the model is proved by comparing the simulation data with the theoretical data. Based on this model, the influence of wheel diameter difference (WDD) on the dynamic behavior of wheelset bearing is studied. The results demonstrate that when the bogie has a rear WDD, lateral displacement (LaD) of the front wheelset is the smallest. When the bogie has an anti‐phase WDD, LaD of the rear wheelset is the smallest, while when the bogie has an in‐phase WDD, LaD of the front and rear wheelsets is the largest, and LaD of the front and rear WDD is between the two, which is in line with the theoretical analysis results. Compared with LaD results of the wheelset bearing outer raceway under normal conditions, when the wheel has a diameter difference, LaD distance of the outer race increases with the WDD increasing, and the frequency of lateral movement also increases with the increase against the WDD gradation. The high‐frequency and large‐distance lateral movement of the wheelset bearing outer race under the WDD will increase the roller‐outer raceway force, and accelerate the failure of the bearing.
