Effect of Warm Compress Therapy From Hard-Boiled Eggs on Corneal Shape

Abstract: Because it is difficult to standardize the pressing force, it is recommended to place the hard-boiled egg close to, but not touching, the eyelid during warm compress therapy. The temperature rise from this treatment protocol should be large enough to melt the meibomian gland secretions without distorting the corneal shape.

“…Ciolino and Belin 29 and Ciolino and associates 44 recently reported that when using the Pentacam there is no posterior corneal protrusion in patients who have received refractive surgery within the first month 29 and after one year 44 . Placido disc‐based corneal topographers are commonly used for corneal research 13,69–77 because of their superior performances in measuring corneal curvature and corneal eccentricity 78–80 . The corneal parameters are derived from the reflection of the Placido discs at the tear film, which cannot provide any information about the posterior corneal surface.…”

“…While it is widely prescribed, warm compress therapy for the treatment of MGD or evaporative dry eye suffers from many shortcomings 2022. It has been shown that it is challenging to achieve and maintain therapeutically warm (>40°C) compresses in the clinic or at home 21.…”

“…WC therapy for the treatment of MGD is unfortunately plagued by many shortcomings. 21 , 22 As described above, other than a clinical study setting where an eye care provider is actively replacing WCs throughout the treatment, it is difficult to achieve and maintain a therapeutically warm (>40°C) compress. 21 Often, the WC may not be sufficiently warm, or it may cool too quickly.…”
