Effect of wear-resistant coatings based on niobium nitride on thermal and stress states of cutting tool

Abstract: The results of studies of the effect of coatings based on niobium nitride on the contact characteristics, thermal and stress states of the cutting wedge of a carbide tool are presented. It is shown that the use of these coatings redistributes heat flows in the cutting zone, contact temperatures and specific loads acting on the front surface of the cutting tool, which leads to an improvement in the thermal and stress state. The greatest effect is achieved when using multilayer coatings.
