Effect of welding speed on the mechanical properties and weld defects of 7075 Al alloy joined by FSW

Abstract: In this study, 7075-T651 Al alloys were joined by friction stir welding (FSW) at a fixed rotational speed and different welding speeds. The stirring tool used in the welding processes was comprised of a shoulder of 20 mm in diameter and modified M6 × 1 HSS hand taps used as pins. The FSW was performed at a rotational speed of 1600 rpm and at welding speeds of 20, 40, and 60 mm min −1 . Mechanical and metallographic tests were carried out on the welded joints and the effects of the welding speed on the mechanic… Show more

“…The fact that aluminium and its alloys are so widely used suggests the welding requirements [2][3][4][5][6][7][8][9]. However, aluminium and its alloys have poor welding capabilities [10][11][12]. Therefore, researchers have been trying to develop solutions for welding some of the aluminium alloys over the past twenty years [13][14][15][16].…”

“…Compatibility of materials under considerations for dissimilar welding can be better observed by a phase diagram. Figure 2, it is obseved that Fe and Al are immiscible in each other and tend to form intermetallic compounds such as FeAl 3 and Fe 3 Al. Low melting point alloy gets initially melted during fusion welding of materials with different melting points.…”

“…The fixture should be designed and fabricated in such a way that it is able to bear the high magnitude forces and high temperature during welding process [2]. Welding speed significantly affected the microstructure and mechanical properties of the joining [3]. Heat generation during Friction Stir Processing is due to the mechanical loads.…”
