“…Studies dealing with mineral absorption and retention in pigs as affected by dietary fiber and antibiotics are extremely limited and generally present conflicting results (Collings et al, 1979;Partridge, 1980;Gueguen et al, 1981;Moser et al, 1982). That high fiber diets could lead to mineral deficiencies has long been known (McCance and Widdowson, 1942), however, scientists disagree as to whether the deleterious effects observed in humans and laboratory animals are due to phytic acid or to a combination of phytic acid and fiber (Reinhold et al, 1975;Davies et al, 1977;Erdman, 1979;Ranhotra et al, 1979).…”

“…Graham et al (1986) observed in animal models that DF such as wheat bran and sugar beet pulp decreased small intestinal lipid absorption. Collings et al (1979) found that the serum cholesterol level was decreased in male growing pigs when more than 10% of wheat middlings was replaced in corn-soybean diets. DF binds to bile acids in the small intestine, which makes them less likely to enter the body, decreases intestinal lipid absorption and subsequently reduces the level of cholesterol in the blood (Graham et al 1986;Wilfart et al 2007;Anderson et al 2009).…”

“…The effect of DF on the reduction of cholesterol was reported in animal (Collings et al 1979;Graham et al 1986;Shen et al 1998) as well as human (Kendall et al 2010). Kendall et al (2010) provided a detailed and comprehensive report on the link between DF and human health.…”

“…Dietary fibre in the diets of pigs has been given special attention during recent years (Low, 1985), in particular with regard to its effects on several physiological variables such as gastric emptying (Rainbird, 1986;Rainbird & Low, 1986a, b), food passage (Sambrook, 1979;Fioramonti & Bueno, 1980;Kuan et al 1983;Bardon & Fioramonti, 1983), fermentation in the large intestine (Argenzio & Southworth, 1975;Imoto & Namioka, 1978;Ehle et al 1982;Varel et al 1984;Varel, 1987) and cholesterol and bile acid metabolism (Collings et al 1979). In addition, information has accumulated on the digestion of fibre constituents in the different segments of the gastrointestinal tract (for example, Kass et al 1980a, b).…”
