Effect of Y-doping on optical properties of multiferroics BiFeO3 nanoparticles

Abstract: We have synthesized yttrium-doped bismuth ferrite nanoparticles through a modified Pechini technique. X-ray diffractometer, transmission electron microscope (TEM) and ultraviolet-visible spectrophotometer (UVVis) probes have been utilized to characterize the nanoparticles. Average particle size estimated from TEM found to be 29 nm for Bi 0.99 Y 0.01 FeO 3 samples. The band gap of the prepared BFO and BYFO nanoparticles varies from 1.97 to 2.29 eV, that is, within the visible range of the sunlight. This propert… Show more

“…towards the lower frequency as observed in this system [10,22]. Also the absorption bands at 817 cm -1 for the BFO sample and 813 cm -1 for the BMFO sample were attributed to the vibration bonds of Bi-O and Fe-O respectively [23]. The observed dielectric loss tangent behaviour of the BFO and BMFO samples can be explained as follows: The dielectric loss tangent depends on several factors, such as stoichiometry, Fe 2+ and Mn 4+ concentrations, and structural homogeneity, which in turn depend on the sintering temperature and composition of the samples [25].…”

“…The introduction of cobalt into the crystal structures promotes a higher band gap, while the impregnated sample possesses a lower band gap, this could be attributed to the secondary phase presented in the sample. The obtained values are in good agreement with other reports [33,34,35,36]. These values indicate the potential application of these materials in optical and photovoltaic devices.…”
