Effect of Zinc Excess in Substrate on Physiological Responses of Sinapis alba L.

Abstract: Zinc (Zn) is a fundamental micronutrient for plants’ metabolism, but in high concentrations, it is toxic. In this study, we investigated the physiological response of white mustard (Sinapis alba L. cv. Belgia) plants to the Zn excess concentrations (50, 100, and 150 mg kg−1) in the substrate. The results showed that sand Zn concentration of 50 mg kg−1 did not affect the physiological parameters of plants, despite to the high Zn accumulation in shoots. The growth, biomass accumulation, photosynthesis rate, and … Show more

“…The response of plants to excess Zn depends on the tolerance or sensitivity of the species to heavy metal toxicity [145]. Common bermudagrass (Cynodon dactylon) [146], white mustard (Sinapis alba) [147], and clary sage (Salvia sclarea) [14], have been characterized as Zn-tolerant species with implications for phytoremediation of Zncontaminated soils. Clary sage is a heliophilous herbaceous plant species [148], showing high adaptability in the Mediterranean area [74], and being of great interest to the aromatic and medicinal industries [149].…”

“…This decline can be attributed to several factors. First, the application of higher levels of ZnO NPs inhibited plant biomass accumulation, and there was a correlation between Zn accumulation and biomass presence (Repkina et al, 2023). This indicates that, as the concentration of ZnO NPs increased, the ability of the plants to effectively utilize the Zn fertilizer decreased.…”
