Effect of zinc supplementation as an alternative management intervention on coccideal load of Beetal bucks under stall-fed conditions

Abstract: In total, 15 Beetal bucks having an average age of 893.53 52.91 days weighing 50.21 1.75 kg were randomly distributed into three groups to assess the effect of zinc supplementation on faecal oocyst load under stall-fed conditions. Bucks under treatment groups were supplemented with either organic (T1) or inorganic (T2) Zn formulated ration to get Zn concentration of 50 mg per kg DM against negative control (T0) on basal diet with no additional Zn supplementation for a period of 120 days. Zn supplementation im… Show more

“…The genus Eimeria is classified in the family Eimeriidae under the phylum Apicomplexa (Bush et al 2001). Many Eimeria species have been capable of establishing clinical disease in goats associated with poor growth performance, diarrhoea, decrease in production, high morbidity and depending on which species is dominant, high mortality rates as well by Radostits et al (1994); Singla et al (2018). Stressors such as dietary changes, weaning, adverse weather, travelling and regrouping play important roles in caprine coccidiosis (Cox, 1998).…”

“…Coccidiosis is an intestinal tract infection that is caused by single celled, eukaryotic, heterospecific organisms (protozoa) called coccidians. About 1800 Eimeria species infect the intestinal tract of different animals and birds (Haug et al, 2008) and infection with this parasite normally occurs through ingestion of contaminated feed or water contaminated with sporulated oocysts (Allen and Fetterer, 2012) and it is one of the most alarming problems for chicken, porcine and calf rearing industries (Pangasa et al, 2007a;Singla et al, 2018;Jaiswal et al, 2023). Parasitic diseases have remained a major problem limiting the expansion and profitability of developing agricultural countries (Mohammed and Zakaiya'a, 2015), where skilled husbandry inputs have not matched the rate of expansion and intensification of livestock holdings.…”

“…Characterization and conservation of indigenous germplasm is very important, since the indigenous breeds are well acclimatized to the local environmental condition (Halimani et al, 2012;Kundu et al, 2017;Paengkoum et al, 2017). Indigenous goats also possess higher disease resistance ability compared to the exotic germplasm (Bett et al, 2009;Singla et al, 2018). The physical and morphological characteristic of any breed is very important to recognize as a distinct breed (Selolo et al, 2015).…”
