Effect sizes and research directions of technology application in museum learning: Evidence obtained by integrating meta‐analysis with co‐citation network analysis

Abstract: Background: Many researchers have explored the impact of various technologies in museums on learning effects. Whether the application of technology in informal museum learning is effective, is the current issue that scholars pay more attention to.Objectives: This study will find the evidence to determine the effects of technology use on museum learning outcomes, and identify the future research trends in the field of technology application in museum learning. Methods: This study used a meta-analysis method to s… Show more

“…Meta-analysis should follow strict criteria when screening the included literature ( Moher et al, 2009 ; Xu et al, 2022 ). First, the articles must involve quantitative empirical research, and literature that does not meet the requirements, such as review research, narrative studies, and qualitative research, should be excluded.…”

“…Related research has focused more on specific research points or the technologies that support them, such as the emergence of social media based on Facebook (Wu et al, 2020) and intelligent learning environments (Lu et al, 2021); (2) there has been a significant shift in the core ideas of technology‐supported learning environment research, with greater emphasis on the learner experience, such as adaptive learning, engagement, motivation and intelligent learning environment concepts appearing in this era. Research has also been conducted on different types of learning environments that provide different learning experiences, such as museum learning environments (Xu et al, 2022), library learning environments (Christoffersen et al, 2021) and dormitory learning environments (Card & Thomas, 2018); and (3) online education, which has been accelerated by the pandemic, has risen to new heights in learning environment research, reflecting the close relationship between learning environment research and social change.…”

“…Numerous research studies tried to explore the museum's performance in different regions of the globe [ [25] , [26] , [27] ]. Further, few studies explore the impact of technological advancement on the Museum's output [ [28] , [29] , [30] , [31] ]. However, the operational efficiency evaluation of Museums on provincial and regional levels in China is undiscovered.…”
