Effective control of SARS-CoV-2 transmission between healthcare workers during a period of diminished community prevalence of COVID-19

Abstract: Previously, we showed that 3% (31/1032)of asymptomatic healthcare workers (HCWs) from a large teaching hospital in Cambridge, UK, tested positive for SARS-CoV-2 in April 2020. About 15% (26/169) HCWs with symptoms of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) also tested positive for SARS-CoV-2 (Rivett et al., 2020). Here, we show that the proportion of both asymptomatic and symptomatic HCWs testing positive for SARS-CoV-2 rapidly declined to near-zero between 25th April and 24th May 2020, corresponding to a decline … Show more

“…Out of these 14 individuals and within 3 weeks after testing, 7 did not develop any symptoms and 7 of them became symptomatic, suggesting that the true asymptomatic carriage rate was 7/413 (1,7%). Our data is comparable to that of recent studies testing HCWs in hospitals of USA and UK, which show asymptomatic infection rates close to 3% [ 12 , 13 ].…”

However, all HWs of the AOU of Padova underwent a routine molecular swab for SARS-CoV-2 every 3 weeks, and nowadays none of those working in the Endocrine Outpatient Service is positive.…”

“…Metadata were uploaded weekly to the MRC CLIMB system as part of the COG-UK Consortium. Samples included healthcare workers (HCW) tested in the CUH HCW screening programme ( Jones et al, 2020a ; Rivett et al, 2020 ), all of which were nanopore sequenced on site.…”
