Background This study aimed to understand pre-licensure nursing students’ perceptions and experiences of using virtual simulation as an alternative to clinical practice during the coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic in South Korea. Methods A total of 20 students from a 4-year baccalaureate nursing program participated in this descriptive qualitative study. Six focus group interviews using Zoom video communications were conducted with three to four participants to understand their experiences. Data were analyzed using an inductive content analysis approach. Results The following three major themes emerged: (a) difficulties encountered in using virtual simulation, (b) benefits to student confidence and competence to provide patient-centered care, and (c) gaps in satisfaction due to needed improvements. Conclusion Virtual simulation could be beneficial for improving pre-licensure nursing students’ confidence and competence; however, improvements to virtual simulation realism and engagement are needed to maximize user satisfaction and performance.

Background: Recent technological advancements have enabled multi-user virtual environments that can provide safe and interactive training opportunities for healthcare providers. This study aims to develop a multi-user virtual simulation program for metacognition and evaluate the students' satisfaction, clinical judgment, and nursing competencies. Methods: Mixed methods was used. A virtual reality simulation program based on an existing curriculum model and experiential learning theory was developed. The five scenarios were evaluated for content validity and tested for pilot. A total of 57 senior nursing students participated. Clinical judgment and nursing competencies were scored, and interviews were conducted with focus groups. Results: Total scores for nursing competency before and after the simulation program were 243.6(29.82) and 264.0(34.53), respectively, with a significant increase of 20.4 ( t = 4.690, p < .001) post-session. Total scores for clinical judgment ranged from 22.2 to 32.0 (out of 44 maximum possible points). Overall, most of the participants were able to achieve their learning outcomes through the program. Conclusions:The findings suggest that the use of virtual simulation is effective in enhancing nursing competence by enhancing metacognition.

La crisis sanitaria originada por la pandemia de la Covid-19 a nivel mundial, ha forzado que se tengan que replantear los modelos de enseñanza y aprendizaje. El objetivo de esta revisión de literatura fue demostrar las estrategias y recursos didácticos empleados en la enseñanza/aprendizaje universitario en el área de biomédicas en contexto de pandemia Covid-19. La búsqueda de literatura fue en las bases de datos PubMed, Science-Direct y Scielo, se consideró artículos originales publicados en el 2020 y 2021, que hayan abordado la simulación virtual como estrategia didáctica, su diseño educativo, recursos, implementación y limitaciones. Se concluye que los diferentes programas de estudio del área de biomédicas incorporaron la simulación virtual de la realidad como estrategia y recurso didáctico frente a la pandemia por la Covid-19, obteniendo experiencias satisfactorias.
