Effective radiative forcing of anthropogenic aerosols in E3SM version 1: historical changes, causality, decomposition, and parameterization sensitivities

Abstract: Abstract. The effective radiative forcing of anthropogenic aerosols (ERFaer) is an important measure of the anthropogenic aerosol effects simulated by a global climate model. Here we analyze ERFaer simulated by the E3SM version 1 (E3SMv1) atmospheric model using both century-long free-running atmosphere–land simulations and short nudged simulations. We relate the simulated ERFaer to characteristics of the aerosol composition and optical properties, and we evaluate the relationships between key aerosol and clou… Show more

“…The global surface temperature time series is shown in Figure 2a, referenced to the 1880-1909 time period and including comparison estimates from several observational datasets. E3SMv1 shows a relatively flat temperature trend between roughly 1850-1970, consistent with previous analyses and most likely due to the overly strong influence of anthropogenic aerosol forcing (Golaz et al, 2019;K. Zhang et al, 2022).…”

“…Nudging was used mainly to constrain the large‐scale circulation, so that the noises caused by the atmospheric internal variability are reduced and short simulations can be used to estimate the aerosol ERF (Kooperman et al., 2012; K. Zhang et al., 2014). Previous studies (K. Zhang et al., 2022; S. Zhang et al., 2022) showed good agreement in the global and regional annual mean aerosol ERF estimates between the free‐running and nudged simulations in E3SMv1.…”

“…As a result, the S21 scheme causes the SWCF change of −1.06 W m −2 and increases the LWCF by 0.57 W m −2 , which results in a change of net cloud forcing by −0.48 W m −2 . The magnitude of cloud forcing changes is comparable to aerosol effective radiative forcings (e.g., K. Zhang et al, 2022), highlighting the important role of aerosol wet removal in assessing the aerosol climate effects.…”
