Effective Use of Magnetometer Feedback for Smart Projectile Applications

Abstract: The use of magnetometers for orientation estimation on rapidly-spinning flight bodies is analyzed.Specifically, the effect of spin-induced magnetic field distortion is discussed, with particular attention to its implications for magnetometer-based orientation estimation. First, the nature of spin-induced field distortion is described and it is shown that, if not properly accounted for, distortion can lead to significant estimation errors in artillery projectiles. Then, an orientation estimator is constructed d… Show more

“…Roll estimation is necessary to resolve the target error components in the fixed-plane (i.e., nonrolling) coordinate system. Numerous authors have studied roll angle estimation for smart weapons based on magnetometer [21][22][23] or infrared sensor measurements [24][25]. For this study, it is assumed that some source of roll feedback is available, and thus the target error components can be transformed into the fixed-plane frame according to,…”

“…The parameter vector was formulated given these models. (24) An example of this analysis is shown in figure 10. Four levels of baseline control effectiveness (0.25, 0.50, 0.75, and 1.00) were investigated with a maneuver to extend range.…”

“…In the past, both dynamic models (5) and kinematic models (6) have been used as process models for projectile Kalman filters, as well as combinations of the two (7). There have been practical concerns with using an IMU on a projectile, the first of which is the availability of sensors that are capable of measuring the spin rate of a projectile.…”
