Effectiveness and Adverse Events of Cyclophosphamide, Vincristine, and Prednisolone Chemotherapy in Feline Mediastinal Lymphoma Naturally Infected with Feline Leukemia Virus

Abstract: Feline leukemia virus (FeLV) infection is considered a poor prognostic factor for feline lymphoma. This study investigated the prevalence of cats suffering from feline lymphoma with natural infection of the feline leukemia virus, as well as clinical signs, adverse events, and survival time after cyclophosphamide, vincristine and prednisolone (COP) chemotherapy. This retrospective study involved 92 cats diagnosed with mediastinal or mediastinal plus other anatomical sites of lymphoma and treated with COP chemot… Show more

“…Regarding laboratory parameters, all cats positive for retroviruses showed some hematologic abnormalities, such as anemia, thrombocytopenia, neutrophilia, and lymphopenia. This finding is consistent with the low blood cell counts reported in other studies [30][31][32][33][34], which may result from direct cytopathic effects on the bone marrow or caused by mechanisms involved in chronic inflammation [31,34,35]. In blood serum tests, total protein, albumin, and globulin levels were statistically significantly different in control cats compared with FeLV-and FIV-infected cats.…”

“…The median survival time for all cases (274 days) is comparable to or even better than some of the older studies [ 31 , 37 , 50 ] as well as compared to the results from studies reported in the past in the Netherlands. The median DFP for cases that went into CR in the present study (763 days) was much better than in the two periods before.…”

“…It is important to mention that survival time depends on multiple risk factors. For example, the MST in the study of Fabrizio et al (2014) was 484 days [ 6 ], which seems to be higher compared to others [ 31 , 37 , 50 ]. However, this study only included mediastinal lymphoma, which, as mentioned earlier, has a better response to therapy.…”

“…AEs with cytotoxic chemotherapy are reported in 47–65% of cases; commonly gastrointestinal or haematological in origin, although rarely grade 4 or 5. 7 , 37 , 38 AEs can also be present in cats treated with corticosteroids, although most are mild in severity. 36 The frequency of AEs observed in the present study (17%) was low compared with cytotoxic treatment; however, the AEs seen were markedly higher in grade.…”
