Effectiveness Evaluation of Levamisole, Albendazole, Ivermectin, andVernonia amygdalinain West African Dwarf Goats

Abstract: Anthelmintic drug resistance has led to the search for alternatives in controlling helminth infections. Fifty West African Dwarf goats without history of anthelmintic treatment were divided equally into five groups. Group A was treated with ivermectin injection subcutaneously, group B with levamisole subcutaneously, group C with albendazole orally, and group D with aqueous extract of Vernonia amygdalina and group E was untreated control. Faecal samples were collected before treatment from each animal and larva… Show more

“…In contrast, the former registered a relatively higher anti-schistosomal index in vivo. Interestingly, V. amygdalina exerted a better adulticidal activity than the standard drug praziquantel in vivo, similar to results reported by Adediran and Uwalaka [25]. Their study proves that V. amygdalina is relatively more potent against helminths than conventional drugs ivermectin, levamisole and albendazole, attesting to its efficacy.…”

“…Their study proves that V. amygdalina is relatively more potent against helminths than conventional drugs ivermectin, levamisole and albendazole, attesting to its efficacy. Additionally, a study by Ogboli et al [26] also reports that the leaf extracts of V. amygdalina have curative effects on mice infected with Schistosoma mansoni [25][26][27][28]. Undoubtedly, V. amygdalina demonstrates that it possesses anti-schistosomal activity and should, therefore, be investigated further to derive the full benefit.…”

“…The results of V. amygdalina in this study support the trials by the traditional healers that these plants treat helminth infections in livestock [17]. The good anthhelmintic potential of V. amygdalina observed in this research is supported by the report of Adediran and Uwalaka [18] that the plant had 100% faecal egg count reduction effect against goat's helminth parasites. However, the report of Nalule et al [17], and Innocent and Deogracious [16] is far from the findings of this study which states that this plant reveals only 64% faecal egg reduction count against mixed infection of goat's worm and kills 50% of the parasite at 6mg/ml respectively.…”

“…Second, the study was aimed at developing an alternative bioremediation method to increase the efficiency of manure stabilization by the addition of PM-containing CaO 2 . The degradation of pharmaceuticals have been responsible for the generation of many transformation products (TP) (Boxall et al 2003;Sadeghi et al 2007;Capece et al 2009;Prasad et al 2010;Horvat et al 2012;Oyeduntan and Uwalaka 2015;Technical Evaluation Report 2015;Mutavdžić Pavlović et al 2018).…”
