Effectiveness of 2 Doses of Varicella Vaccine in Children

Abstract: The effectiveness of 2 doses of varicella vaccine in the first 2.5 years after recommendation of a routine second dose of the vaccine for children is excellent. Odds of developing varicella were 95% lower for children who received 2 doses compared with 1 dose of varicella vaccine.

“…The reduction was particularly great in the vaccinated cohorts of children aged one to eight years, with a 98.5% decline in incidence within a period of only five years, higher than that reported in other places where universal vaccination has been introduced, such as the US and the Veneto region in Italy [6,12,[23][24][25]. An important reduction in varicella incidence was also noted in persons aged 10 to 21 years, in cohorts included in the strategy of vaccination of susceptibles.…”

“…6 Varivax [8][9][10] leading to a recommendation for a second dose of the vaccine at 4 to 6 years of age by the ACIP in 2006. 11 Recent studies have revealed that varicella incidence has declined further since implementation of the second dose 12,13 and effectiveness of the 2-dose series has been estimated to be as high as 98%, 14 confirming findings from clinical trials. 15 In a previous cohort study conducted from 1995 to 2009, we reported an effectiveness of ∼90% over 14 years postvaccination for the first dose, with no cases noted after the second dose.…”

“…The current 2-dose varicella vaccine schedule is expected to further reduce the number of varicella cases and exposures in vaccinated persons. 28,29 To further mitigate VZV exposure, persons with herpes zoster who have direct contact with infants should be advised to cover their rash until lesions are completely healed. For persons aged 60 years and older, herpes zoster vaccine is recommended to reduce the likelihood of VZV reactivation.…”
