Quality of Life in Postoperative Colorectal Cancer Survivors: A Structural Equation Model

Objective: The present study has been aimed at constructing a causal model to determine factors affecting healthrelatedquality of life (HRQoL) in postoperative patients with colorectal cancer (CRC) following discharge.Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted with 396 postoperative CRC cancer patients fromten tertiary hospitals representing each of the four Regions of Thailand. Data was collected through a standardquestionnaire. Structure equation modeling (SEM) was applied to analyze data.Results: The findings revealed that the majority of patients with CRC surgery had a moderate HRQoL. One hundredand twenty-three patients (31.1%) had complications. SEM showed a good fit with ƛ2=40.347, df=28, p=0.062,GFI=0.980, CFI=0.959 and RMSEA=0.033. The final model showed that age, stage of cancer and healthcare servicebeing received following CRC surgery had direct effects on HRQoL. Nutritional status and follow-up outpatientclinic had indirect effects on HRQoL during postoperative complications. Moreover, social support and primaryfamily caregiver support had indirect effects on HRQoL through self-management capacity.Conclusion: The findings of this study emphasized the importance of implementing effective strategies to improvequality of life among postoperative patients with CRC after discharge and indicated these strategies should focuson quality of healthcare service following CRC surgery, self-management capacity and prevention of postoperativecomplications. Postoperative complications can be reduced by providing effective follow-up in outpatient clinicsand nutritional status management, consequently improving quality of life among this population.

Background A colostomy is a surgery that makes a temporary or permanent opening called a stoma. A stoma is a path that goes from the large intestine to the outside of your abdomen. Aim of study: the study aimed to assess knowledge and performance of nurses about colostomy care among old age in Beni-Suef. Subjects and methods: A descriptive design was used to achieve the aim of the current study. The study was conducted in surgical departments male and female at Beni-Suef university hospital, Beni-Suef specialized hospital, and health insurance hospital. Convenient sample was used for this study; include all nurses (78 nurses) working in surgical departments at Beni-Suef university hospital (44 nurses), Beni-Suef specialized hospital (13 nurses), and health insurance hospital (21 nurses). Three tools for data collection were used to carry out the current study namely; socio-demographic questionnaire sheet, questionnaire sheet for nurses' knowledge regarding colostomy care, and ostomy care observation checklist. Results: More than half (57.7%) of studied nurses their ages were less than 30 years. More than two thirds (67.9%) of studied nurses are females. More than half (60.3%) of them had nursing health institute. Conclusion and recommendations: Nearly half of nurses had satisfactory level of total knowledge about colostomy care., more than one third of nurses had satisfactory level of total performance about colostomy care. Purpose: This research was carried out in order to examine the effect of clean intermittent catheterization (CIC) training with a video developed by the researchers on patients’ ability to practice CIC and self-confidence.Methods: The population of the study consisted of patients who had just started performing CIC in the urology polyclinic of a city hospital in Istanbul. The sample consisted of a total of 80 patients, 40 of whom were in the experimental group and 40 in the control group. The experimental group patients were given CIC training with a training video that was downloaded to the mobile phone of the patient, a family member, or caregiver. The patients’ practice skills were evaluated by 2 independent observers. The DISCERN Inquiry Form and the Global Quality Score, the Patient Information Form, the CIC Skill Checklist and the Self-Confidence Scale in Clean Intermittent Self-Catheterization were used to collect data.Results: In the experimental group, consisting of patients who received video-assisted training, the mean scores for the CIC Skill Checklist and the Self-Confidence Scale in Clean Intermittent Self-Catheterization were statistically significantly higher than in the control group (P<0.001), the experience of feeling pain during catheterization was less than in the control group, and the patients in the experimental group experienced statistically significantly fewer complications such as urinary tract infections, urgency, urinary incontinence, hematuria and urethral stricture (P<0.05).Conclusions: Video-assisted CIC training had a positive effect on patients’ practical skills and self-confidence.
