Effectiveness of a Reference Accuracy Strategy for Peer-Reviewed Journal Articles

Abstract: Dissemination of information through peer-reviewed journal articles is an important requirement of success in academia. Despite the importance of publishing articles, about 25% to 45% of articles published in nursing journals have at least 1 reference error in the reference list. The authors discuss the implementation and outcomes of an internal copyeditor strategy aimed at reducing reference inaccuracy in faculty-authored journal articles.

“…There have been few studies in nursing since this time. Speck and St Pierre Schneider 13 analyzed the reference accuracy of journal articles authored by faculty in their school of nursing before and after a copyeditor was hired to edit faculty manuscripts. Of 36 articles in the study, there were fewer major errors in the copyediting group (1 error/10 citations) than the group without a review by the copyeditor (4 errors/10 citations).…”

“…In most cases, published documents are obtained using bibliographic databases such as PubMed, CINAHL, or Google Scholar. The citation information needs to be accurate to locate the abstract or full-text article ( Masic, 2013 ; Speck & St. Pierre Schneider, 2013 ). Although bibliographic management software such as Zotero or EndNote helps authors prepare their citations and references based on a specific style, it is up to the author to ensure that the reference is complete and accurate ( Chinn, 2016 ; Oermann et al, 2018 ).…”

“…Such errors have been investigated in numerous research areas (Spivey and Wilks 2004;Davies 2012): medical sciences (biomedicine, biomedical informatics, orthopedics, general surgery, otolaryngology, emergency medicine, nursing, burns, anatomy, public health, and veterinary medicine); entomology; psychology (counseling psychology, and experimental psychology); social work; library and information science; business and economics; and clinical chemistry. 1 Thus, the bibliographical material used is most often published in peer-reviewed journals (Speck and St. Pierre Schneider 2013) specializing in specific research areas (Davies 2012;Fenton et al 2000;George and Robbins 1994;Montenegro et al 2021). Rarely, the reference accuracy of a single highly cited journal article is examined (Liang, Zhong, and Rousseau 2014).…”
