Effectiveness of a triclosan/copolymer dentifrice on dental plaque and gingivitis in Brazilian individuais with cerebral palsy

Abstract: This randomized clinical trial investigated the effect of a dentifrice containing triclosan on the reduction of dental plaque and gingivitis in institutionalized individuals with cerebral palsy. Fifty-seven residents were randomly allocated to a test group (n=28, dentifrice with triclosan) and a control group (n=29, conventional dentifrice). “…However, it should be noted that the conclusions of case-reports could not be applied directly in clinical practice (Hurd 2014). Although a low number of interventional studies were observed (3.01%), an increased number of publications on the theme of this study was observed every decade (Abd-Elmonem et al 2021, Rai et al 2018, M Baeder et al 2017, Inal et al 2017, Yitzhak et al 2017, Feng et al 2007.…”

“…Several agents have been tried with varying efficacy but with one or other limitations. Triclosan has been used for a longtime as a suitable antiplaque agent in dentifrice, [6][7][8][9][10] however recent concerns with use of triclosan demands a suitable alternative.…”

“…Several studies have substantiated the use of triclosan containing tooth paste in controlling plaque and gingivitis. [6][7][8][9][10] There are quite a number of health impacts of triclosan brought to light by the scientific and environmental community across the globe [11][12][13] . It is known to cause skin irritation, hormone disruption and it interferes with the muscle function.…”
