Effectiveness of Air Filters and Air Cleaners in Allergic Respiratory Diseases: A Review of the Recent Literature

Abstract: Air filtration is frequently recommended as a component of environmental control measures for patients with allergic respiratory disease. Residential air filtration can be provided by whole house filtration via the home’s heating, ventilation, or air conditioning system, by portable room air cleaners, or a combination of the two. Appliances to filter the sleep breathing zone also have been developed. High-efficiency whole house filtration, high-efficiency particulate air sleep zone air filtration, and high-eff… Show more

“…However, the bioaerosol levels in Danish homes can vary considerably, depending on occupancy and season Madsen et al, 2012). The association between indoor exposure to allergens and lower lung function is well known for individuals with respect to respiratory allergies or asthma (Sublett, 2011). Although our subjects did not suffer from asthma, the association between lung function and exposure to endotoxin in the home is consistent with results of previous studies on the prevalence of asthma in adults and children (Michel et al, 1996;Rabinovitch et al, 2005).…”

“…One practical intervention to consider is the use of air filtration systems to reduce environmental exposures 75, 76 . A recent rostrum on air filtration published in the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology outlined what is known in this field and called for more rigorous trials and research 75 .…”

“…The benefits of PAC use for respiratory health are well-studied, with much of the literature suggesting their use in homes can improve asthma- and allergy-related symptoms [15]. Filtration efficiency of allergens may be greater because allergens tend to be larger than PM 2.5 (in the 5 to 30 μm range).…”
