Effectiveness of an “Exclusive Intervention Strategy” to increase medical male circumcision uptake among men aged 25–49 years in South Africa

Abstract: BackgroundSouth Africa introduced medical male circumcision (MMC) to reduce HIV incidence. Mathematical modeling suggested that targeting MMC services to men aged 20–34 years could provide the most immediate impact on HIV incidence. However the majority of MMCs performed have been among males aged ≤25 years. We evaluated an intervention package to increase MMC uptake among men aged 25–49 years.MethodsWe conducted a pre-post study to compare the proportion of men (aged 25–49 years) presenting for MMC during the… Show more

“…Since VMMC programs were established in several sub-Saharan African countries, demand creation activities in VMMC programs to date have tended to focus on education and recruitment campaigns for adolescent and adult men [ 9 , 12 , 13 ]. However, some recent studies have also investigated women’s acceptance of male circumcision and their partner’s readiness to undergo the procedure, and willingness to help promote VMMC for their male partners and contacts [ 10 , 14 ].…”

“…Based on our findings we piloted an exclusive adult clinic to provide an environment where mature men could feel comfortable to access VMMC services. Results of this intervention are reported in full elsewhere [27]. Women could encounter communication challenges and resistance when speaking to mature men about circumcision, thus learning constructive skills could assist them in creating awareness on VMMC.…”

“…This sub-study took place as part of a larger implementation science research study (Imbizo study) that aimed to increase the proportion of men aged 25–49 years who accessed VMMC services [27]. Here, we explore the attitude and willingness of women to start a conversation on medical male circumcision with their sexual partners.…”

“…Voluntary medical male circumcision (VMMC) significantly reduces the risk of acquiring HIV in men (1)(2)(3)(4)(5)(6)(7)(8)(9) and for every circumcision there is a reduction of male to female sexual transmission of HIV by approximately 60% (10,11). VMMC is associated with several health benefits such as reducing the risk of contracting genital ulcers, syphilis, penile cancer, human papillomavirus (HPV), herpes simplex virus (HSV) and cancroid (12,13).…”
