Effectiveness of Bacterial and Fungal Isolates to Control Phoma lingam on Oilseed Rape Brassica napus

Abstract: Blackleg disease caused by Phoma lingam is an important disease of oil seed rape (Brassica napus) causing losses up to 95%. The efficacy of microbial antagonists against P. lingam in greenhouse was tested. Serratia plymuthica HRO-C48 and Gliocladium catenulatum J1446 were able to reduce the disease intensity of OSR cotelydones infested with P. lingam at rates 44% and 52% respectively. The reduction of the infestation of the root collar in BBCH14/15 was evaluated as well. Plants treated with a suspension of the… Show more

“…Many strains of P. fluorescens have been shown to be potential biocontrol agents suppressing plant pathogens. However, they were isolated mainly from the rhizosphere or the bulk soil [ 27 , 28 , 29 , 30 , 31 ]. To our knowledge, little is known about the biocontrol activity of P. fluorescens strains originally isolated from the internal tissues of rape.…”

“…When the two fungal colonies placed on opposite sides had grown sufficiently to close the gap between them, the distance between the bacterial colony and the L. maculans colony was measured using a digital caliper (Mitutoyo Corporation, Kawaski, Kanagawa, Japan). The inhibition zone was rated using a 5 point scaling system: 4 (very high), inhibition zone >10 mm; 3 (high), imbibition zone 5–10 mm; 2 (medium), inhibition zone <5 mm; 1 (low), L. maculans growth stopped at the bacterial streak line; 0 (zero), no inhibition zone with L. maculans typically growing over the bacterial streak ( Hammoudi et al, 2012 ).…”

“…Symptoms of blackleg include premature senescence, lodging of the plant and even seed loss [53], making it an economically important disease in the production of oilseed rape. Similar to the antagonists of V. longisporum, different microorganisms such as Bacillus species, Gliocladium catenulatum, and Serratia plymuthica were identified as antagonists acting against blackleg disease in oilseed rape [54,55]. Both Leptosphaeria species can co-occur on the same plant and spread via splash-dispersal of inoculum or wind-dispersal of ascospores [56,57].…”
