Effectiveness of Bioactive Food Components in Experimental Colon Carcinogenesis

Abstract: The aim of the present study was the evaluation of possible protective effects of selected bioactive food components in experimental N,N-dimethylhydrazine (DMH)-induced colon carcinogenesis.Wistar albino rats (n = 92) were fed a high fat diet or conventional laboratory diet. Two weeks after the beginning of the trial, DMH injections were given to six groups of rats at the dose of 20 mg/kg b.w. twice weekly. The activity of bacterial enzymes in faeces and serum bile acid concentrations were determined.High fat … Show more

“…SCFA supplement was prepared in serum‐free MEM by mixing 15 μ m of sodium acetate, 5 μ m of sodium propionate, and 5 μ m of sodium butyrate (3:1:1 ratio), mimicking human physiological concentrations and ratios in the descending colon. [ 58,59 ] Viable LGG in MRS broth were harvested at the mid‐log phase (7.5 h after inoculation), quantified, and diluted to 1 x 10 8 CFU mL −1 for treatment. Caco‐2 cells were seeded in six well plates at 1.3 × 10 6 cells per well.…”

“…Modifications in the concentrations or the ability of host tissues to use SCFAs have been described broadly . Moreover, measurement of SCFAs in biological samples has received increasing attention due to the important role that SCFAs play in physiological and pathological processes .…”
