Effectiveness of case management as a cross‐sectoral healthcare provision for women with breast cancer

Abstract: The tested CM model did not improve the quality of life or psychological well-being of the patients beyond treatment as usual. Possible reasons include that the treatment was already of high standards in the control group or that there are possibly different impacts than found in the literature regarding different forms of organization in CM. The need for and the tailoring of this CM model as well as the transfer of CM to other oncological indications remain to be clarified. Copyright © 2016 John Wiley & Sons,… Show more

“…Moreover, the total annual economic cost of cancer is approximately US$1.16 trillion (World Health Organization, 2017). Individuals with cancer require extended inpatient and outpatient care by several health professionals (Bleich et al, 2017; Strupp et al, 2018). However, during cancer treatment, the care that patients receive has been uncoordinated and fragmented due to the many health care providers patients see in multiple health care settings (Strupp et al, 2018).…”

“…However, during cancer treatment, the care that patients receive has been uncoordinated and fragmented due to the many health care providers patients see in multiple health care settings (Strupp et al, 2018). This is a problem because many cancer patients have high levels of physical dysfunction and psychological stress (Bleich et al, 2017; Hsu, Chai, Lin, Wang, & Chen, 2017; Strupp et al, 2018). The stress also challenges their quality of life (QoL) and raises their health care costs (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2016; Hsu et al, 2017).…”

“…Several factors may influence the stability of such tools, including changes in distress in relation to the child’s status, other occurring life events, or factors associated with the measures’ reliability or inherent sensitivity. Documenting reliability of tools such as the DT or ESAS is of primary importance as users are increasingly treating distress levels as outcomes or predictors of clinical change, independently from their screening abilities [ 25 , 26 ]. Stability over time is the only method to ascertain reliability for such one-item tools.…”

“… [18] Since all of these results were self-reported by cancer patients, they may be overestimated and can not represent the real difference between the 2 groups. [5] Information bias can not be avoided because all the participants were not blinded and they have been informed about the aim of the study, [10] the control group may receive a higher quality treatment than routine care. [33] To reduce information bias, neutrally informed the purpose of the research at recruitment is needed.…”

“…Since many cancer patients have different degrees of psychological stress, mental disorder and physical dysfunction,[ 5 6 7 ] case management (CM) was established to use resources effectively to increase the quality of treatments and improve patient care services. The definition of case management is “a collaborative process that provides assessment, planning, implementation, coordination, evaluation to meet the individuals and familys health service needs”, [8] and the case management system is carried out by substance of multidisciplinary, patient-centered and organizational care.…”
