Effectiveness of education intervention of tuberculosis treatment adherence in Khartoum State: A study protocol for a randomized control trial

Abstract: Background Treatment failure and disease relapse among tuberculosis (TB) patients are commonly caused by non-adherence. It can lead to prolonged infection, increased transmission, drug resistance, and loss of life. Even though the causative microorganism of TB has been identified for more than a century, the disease is still a substantial public health problem worldwide. This research aims to devise, implement, and assess an educational intervention to improve adherence to TB treatment. Methods and findings … Show more

“…Poor compliance or interrupted treatment results in a high risk of drug resistance (15,(22)(23)(24)(25). The incidence of drug resistance is a barrier to global TB eradication efforts, causing more comprehensive transmission and death (26)(27)(28). This causes patients with Tuberculosis to worry about their quality of life (29).…”

“…Adherence to TB medication is crucial to prevent the spread of the disease and achieve patient recovery. However, the primary issue frequently encountered in TB treatment is the low level of patient adherence to medication schedules prescribed by healthcare professionals (Khamis et al, 2022). This low adherence often has implications for Bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BTA) test results, which are used to monitor the progression of TB (Rojali & Noviatuzzahrah, 2018).…”
