Effectiveness of en route traffic information in developing countries using conventional discrete choice and neural‐network models

Abstract: Providing commuters with traffic information or advising them of alternative routes during traffic incidents can alleviate congestion. For decades, advanced traveler information services (ATIS) have been devised and dedicated to this role. ATIS comprises a wide variety of technologies across the world, including radio traffic information (RTI) advisory service. RTI is common in both developed and developing countries. Although extensive literature and evaluation results of ATISs and RTI are available in develo… Show more

“…The convexity of the LoS index complies with the results of LoS analysis in Chen et al (2002). More convexity implies that marginal impact of change in travel time is felt much strongly in short trips compared with long trips (Bagloee, Ceder, and Bozic 2013;Chen et al 2002).…”

“…Traffic information advisories are effective in managing the motorists' perception of traffic (Bagloee, Ceder, and Bozic 2013;Bazzan and Klugl 2001). This can help traffic authorities to mitigate the BP's impacts.…”

“…The advent of ITS which has led to advanced traveler information systems (ATIS) such as radio and variable message signs has seen real-time traveler information become a reality [81,82]. As such, in the mid-1990s, some scholars proposed tapping into this source of information to push for cooperative routing [83].…”

“…Taking facility capacities and competition behavior into account [4,5], drivers may find no vacant spaces when arriving at the target parking lot. Parking Guidance and Information System (PGIS) is a useful tool to assist drivers to identify the parking lot with vacant spaces [6,7]. Based on the commonly used display terminal Variable Message Sign (VMS), PGIS releases the same parking information to all drivers that passed by [8], which generally induces many vehicles to compete for the limited spaces.…”
