Effectiveness of Homeopathic Medicine Associated with Allopathic Medicine in the Outpatient Management of Influenza-like Illnesses or Ear, Nose, and Throat Disorders by Pharmacists

Abstract: BACKGROUND: Pharmacists play an increasing role in advising on treatment for minor illnesses such as influenza-like illness (ILI) or ear, nose, and throat (ENT) disorders. However, the profile of patients consulting pharmacists with these illnesses, the types of over-the-counter (OTC) medicines recommended by pharmacists, and the effectiveness of these treatments have not been studied.

“…Even if the present survey was not planned to investigate the etiology of cough and no data are available concerning the reasons of people’s attitude to anti-tussive therapeutic strategies, it is anyhow plausible that the high number of individuals that manifested such an increasing interest in homeopathic anti-tussive remedies would have likely be leaded to this disposition by the poor results obtained by using the traditional anti-tussive drugs presently available in the market. On the other hand, this hypothesis may be also supported by the increasing number of controlled trials aimed to investigate and compare the clinical effects of homeopathic versus usual anti-tussive drugs in recent years [ 24 , 25 ].…”

“…These studies showed an equal effectiveness of the two treatments; however homeopathy had a more rapid onset of improvement and fewer side effects than conventional therapy. A prospective observational multicenter study of the outpatient management of influenza-like illnesses in 8 regions in France also showed homeopathic treatment to be equal to allopathic treatment [88].…”

“…As was previously discussed, our present methods for the treatment and prevention of influenza are less than adequate. Homeopathy has a long history of the management and prevention of these infections and even in the United States, they are in the top ten nonprescription products used for coughs, colds, and flu [88]. A systematic review was performed by the Cochrane Library of the use of a particular homeopathic medicine, Oscillococcinum, in the prevention and treatment of influenza [89].…”

“…Out of 11 prospective studies, 6 studies compared homeopathy to conventional treatment (CT). Conde Diez et al, 44 Danno et al 45 and Vincent et al 46 (219, 573 and 461 patients respectively) comparing homeopathy with conventional treatment in influenza/ILI found homeopathy widely accepted and beneficial. The other three studies on URTIs comparing same by Grimaldi-Bensouda et al, 47 Haidvogl et al 48 and Riley et al 49 (518, 1577 and 500 patients, respectively) suggested homeopathy was non-inferior to CT.…”
