Effectiveness of interventions to improve patient handover in surgery: A systematic review

Abstract: Improvements in information transfer may be achieved through checklist- or proforma-based interventions in surgical handover. Although initial data appear promising, future research must be backed by robust study design, relevant outcomes, and clinical implementation strategies to identify the most effective means to improve information transfer and optimize patient outcomes.

“…Our team successfully implemented a standardized multidisciplinary protocol for the handover of pediatric cardiac surgery patients to the intensive care unit that resulted in decreased technical errors and improved information transfer . While the immediate efficacy of patient safety initiatives in general, and standardized handoffs specifically, is well documented, the sustainability of practice changes is largely understudied . It is, therefore, currently unknown if strategies to improve handover processes after cardiac surgery in pediatric patients are sustainable.…”

“…The use of standardized tools, protocols, and checklists during the hand over promotes consistency, improves the quality of information transfer, and decreases the potential for communication errors or misunderstandings . In the scenario, the participants used checklists or SBAR to communicate information, but there are other tools, such as…”
