Effectiveness of natural oral contrast agents in magnetic resonance imaging of the bowel

Abstract: Purpose: The purpose was to find an oral contrast agent that can be utilized in MRI of the small bowel and fulfill the following criteria: natural, with no or minimal side effects, nonexpensive, causes the maximum bowel distension and has the best imaging quality with no artifacts. Methods: Fourteen healthy volunteers were included. Each volunteer underwent 3 MRI examinations on different days using 3 different oral contrast materials; water, milk and pineapple juice. Coronal T2WI MRI was done at KAUH Diagnost… Show more

“…31 A bright intra-gastric intensity is essential to facilitate automated image segmentation. While the most common contrast meal used in gastric MRI studies is a soupbased diet or caloric liquid nutrient (eg, Ensure) with the addition of paramagnetic MRI contrast agents (eg, gadolinium chelates), 32 some studies have proposed to use naturalistic contrast meal such as blueberry or pineapple juice because they contain a high level of manganese 30,33,34 ; the use of naturalistic contrast meal is advantageous because it avoids potential safety concerns of an otherwise fabricated contrast agent. Here, we identified that firm tofu is also a high manganese food that contains 1.2 mg of manganese per 100 g tofu.…”

“…Commonly, agents such as 0.1% lowdensity barium suspension (NeuLumEX) and mannitol are used. Recent studies have identified pineapple juice as a potent medium for bowel expansion and enhancing image clarity, offering the advantage of minimal artefacts and lacking adverse reactions (Figure 1) [4] . ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Imaging Sequences: MRE employs an extensive range of imaging sequences to obtain intricate visuals of the small intestine.…”
