Effectiveness of Nicardipine for Blood Pressure Control in Patients with Subarachnoid Hemorrhage

Abstract: ObjectiveThe purpose of the study is to determine the effectiveness and safety of nicardipine infusion for controlling blood pressure in patients with subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH).MethodsWe prospectively evaluated 52 patients with SAH and treated with nicardipine infusion for blood pressure control in a 29 months period. The mean blood pressure of pre-injection, bolus injection and continuous injection period were compared. This study evaluated the effectiveness of nicardipine for each Fisher grade, for diffe… Show more

“…Nicardipine has shown effectiveness and safety in managing acute hypertension following various conditions, including post-subarachnoid hemorrhage, severe antepartum hypertension, hypertensive emergencies [ 23 ]. Nicardipine is also a versatile medication used to maintain intraoperative hemostability, managing conditions like tracheal intubation or extubation-induced hypertension, chronic hypertension, and inducing controlled hypotension for specific surgical procedures [ 11 ].…”

“…Nicardipine, a second-generation dihydropyridine-type calcium channel blocker, is the most frequently used anti-hypertensive agent following acute brain injury [26] , [28] , [31] , [61] - [63] . Nifedipine and nimodipine are also established dihydropyridine-type calcium channel blockers.…”

“…However, nicardipine is more selective for cerebral and coronary blood vessels and is widely used to manage severe hypertension after acute brain injury, including ischemic stroke, traumatic brain injury, and subarachnoid hemorrhage [25] [27] . In clinical practice, nicardipine has also been used for the treatment of acute hypertension in acute brain disease, with promising outcomes [26] , [28] [31] . Previous studies also reported neuroprotective effects of nicardipine on hypertension-induced brain damage [32] – [34] .…”
