Increasing postgraduate enrollments gives rise to many proposal documents required for vetting and human supervision. Reading and comprehension of large documents is a boring and somewhat difficult task for humans which can be delegated to machines. One way of assisting supervisors with this routine screening of academic proposals is to provide an artificial intelligent (AI) tool for initial structural vetting -checking if sections of proposals are complete and appear where they are supposed to. Natural Language Processing (NLP) techniques in AI for document vetting has been applied in legal and financial domains. However, in academia, available tools only perform tasks such as checking proposals for plagiarism, spellings or grammar, word editing, and not structural vetting of academic proposal. This paper presents a tool named Autoproofreader that attempts to perform the task of structural document review of proposals on behalf of the human expert using formal techniques and document structure understanding hinged on context free grammar rules (CFGs). The experimental results on a corpus of 20 academic proposals using confusion matrix technique for evaluation gives an overall of 87% accuracy. This tool is expected to be a useful aid in postgraduate supervision for vetting students' academic proposals.

The Entomological Society of America (ESA) Student Debates is an annual student competition at the ESA Annual Meeting organized by Student Debates Subcommittee (SDS) members of the ESA Student Affairs Committee. In conjunction with the 2023 ESA Annual Meeting theme, ‘Insects and influence: Advancing entomology’s impact on people and policy’, the theme of this year’s student debate was ‘Addressing emerging issues in entomology’. With the aid of ESA membership, the SDS selected the following debate topics: (1) Should disclosure of artificial intelligence large language models in scientific writing always be required? and (2) Is it more important to prioritize honey bee or native pollinator health for long-term food security within North America? Four student teams from across the nation, composed of 3–5 student members and a professional advisor, were assigned a topic and stance. Over the course of 5 months, all team members researched and prepared for their assigned topic before debating live with an opposing team at the 2023 ESA Annual Meeting in National Harbor, Maryland. SDS members additionally prepared and presented introductions for each debate topic to provide unbiased backgrounds to the judges and audience for context in assessing teams’ arguments. The result was an engaging discussion between our teams, judges, and audience members on emerging issues facing entomology and its impact on people and policy, such as scientific communication and food security, that brought attention to the complexities involved when debating topics concerning insects and influence.

Grammar has long been a source of aggravation for anyone learning a second language, not just English language learners, but also non-native English teachers. People can now employ Grammarly to correct their grammar mistakes, owing to the sophistication of modern technology. The debate over whether teachers use Grammarly as part of their professional development is ongoing. The purpose of this study was to identify the grammatical errors made by non-native English teachers when writing narrative texts before and after Grammarly checked them. The participants in this qualitative study were 24 English teachers from the English Teacher Association of Buleleng Regency in Bali, Indonesia. This study employed the surface approach taxonomy to analyze the grammatical errors and interviewed the teachers to elicit factors that contribute to grammatical errors. This study found that the most common type of misformation error, specifically the alternating form error, was found in both Grammarly-corrected and Grammarly-uncorrected texts. Furthermore, intralingual factors were responsible for the majority of errors. The integration of Grammarly into teachers' professional learning is discussed.
