Effectiveness of Oral Antiseptics on Tooth Biofilm: A Study in vivo

Abstract: The reduction in the plaque index during the period of evaluation was different between the types of mouth-wash. The mouthwash containing the active ingredient chlorhexidine was the most effective, followed by the essential oil, cetylpyridinium chloride, triclosan and H. virginiana.

“…They are broad-spectrum cationic biocides, which generally affect the microbial membrane integrity of both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria 4 . These antiseptics are also commonly used as co-adjuvants in the treatment of periodontal diseases such as gingivitis and chronic and aggressive periodontitis 5 , as the clinical anti-plaque efficacy of CHX and CPC on oral supragingival and subgingival biofilms has been shown extensively 1,6,7 .…”

“…Therefore, mechanical control of dental biofilm through routine oral hygiene is key to pathogen control and disease prevention [ 6 , 7 , 8 , 9 ]. Chemical plaque control with antibacterial mouthwashes can be an alternative to mechanical methods when they are ineffective [ 7 , 10 , 11 , 12 , 13 , 14 ]. Hence, the use of chemical and mechanical control is recommended synchronously to guarantee good oral hygiene and potentiate a good oral health state [ 7 , 15 , 16 , 17 , 18 , 19 , 20 , 21 , 22 ].…”

“…Sus principales agentes patógenos son el Streptococcus mutans (S. mutans) y Porphyromonas gingivalis (P. gingivalis) (2,3) . Para mantener la salud de los tejidos bucales se requieren de cepillos dentales, dentífricos, hilo dental y antisépticos bucales (4)(5)(6) . El gluconato de clorhexidina (CHX) es la primera elección (7) , porque conjuga los efectos antibiopelícula/antibacteriano.…”
