Effectiveness of peridomestic space spraying with insecticide on dengue transmission; systematic review

Abstract: Although peridomestic space spraying is commonly applied by national dengue control programmes, there are very few studies evaluating the effectiveness of this intervention. There is no clear evidence for recommending peridomestic space spraying as a single, effective control intervention. Thus, peridomestic space spraying is more likely best applied as part of an integrated vector management strategy. The effectiveness of this intervention should be measured in terms of impact on both adult and immature mosqu… Show more

“…aegypti control programs. The latter should not be a surprise, given the little evidence on the effectiveness of the building blocks of such programs, be it (peri-) domestic spraying against adult mosquitoes 24 or chemical and biological interventions targeting immature stages. 25 Erlanger and others 26 ventured a meta-analysis and found, in an array of controlled studies of variable quality, a more than 3-fold reduction in Breteau index with chemical control combined with environmental management.…”

“…This can be accomplished by fitting lids on containers or by killing the insects during aquatic stages using insecticides (World Health Organization, 2012). In hot-spot or epidemic areas, insecticide space-spraying is recommended; however, its efficacy in other situations has not been well-documented (Esu et al, 2010). Indoor space-spraying is highly labor-intensive and impractical in the event of an outbreak in most locations.…”

“…Instead, we registered the discrepancy, which may have reflected differences in eligibility criteria, data analysis or interpretation. [56][57][58] For example, different eligibility criteria were used in the reviews of chemical vector control for dengue, 14,34,35 different eligibility criteria and different methods for calculating summary effect measures were used in the meta-analyses of albendazole for lymphatic filariasis, 27,28 and mainly the same evidence was interpreted in different ways in the reviews of eye or face washing and environmental improvements for trachoma. 30,32,33 Although trials of individual treatments can help in selecting drugs for use in mass drug administration programmes, such trials are not usually designed to address rare but serious side-effects or drug resistance, both of which are concerns in large-scale programmes.…”
