Effectiveness of Pleurotus eryngii (King Oyster Mushroom) Extract for Killing Larvae and Attracting Adult Mosquito Vectors in Samut Songkhram Province of Thailand

Abstract: In this study, we assessed the efficiency of Pleurotus eryngii mushroom extract for killing larvae and attracting adult mosquito vectors (Aedes aegypti and Culex sitiens) in the Samut Songkhram province of Thailand. Five extract concentrations (120, 12, 1.2, 0.12 and 0.012 mg/L) were used for larvicidal tests, while 3 concentrations (100, 10, and 1 mg/L) were examined for adult mosquito attraction. The larvicidal results showed that P. eryngii extract did not kill Ae. aegypti larvae, while the extract had mini… Show more

“…Recently, we have studied the efficiency of a standard mosquito trap, CDC Light Trap, in coastal areas of Samut Songkhram Province [10]. It was found that the trap was able to attract a lot of Culex mosquitos in the areas but it was not efficient enough to control Anopheles mosquitos, the primary vector for malaria.…”

“…Each type of trap has a different price, quality, features, methods of operation, and working mechanisms which must be selected to suit the area for a maximally efficient mosquito control program [9]. In our previous study, we developed a mosquito trap box which was not highly effective for doing the research in coastal areas of Samut Songkhram Province [10]. In addition, we studied the efficiency of the mushroom extracts used to attract mosquitos in the studied areas [7,11].…”

“…This lineage was first reported from the Eastern Slaty Thrush (Turdus subalaris, Turdidae, Passeriformes) in Brazil [8], which showed that P. juxtanucleare can spillover from domestic chicken to wild animals. Since P. juxtanucleare has a global distribution, when a suitable temperature is present, not only can the vectors develop but also the parasite can complete its life cycle and be transmitted to the next host, which can be domestic and wild birds [37,58,59]. Southern Thailand may be an excellent environment for the development and transmission of P. juxtanucleare and other vector-borne diseases between wild passerine birds and backyard chickens.…”
