Effectiveness of Polymer Additives in Concrete for 3D Concrete Printing Using Fly Ash

Abstract: The article shows the effectiveness of the use of polymer additives for the production of fine-grained concrete mixtures and concretes based on using coal fly ash, which can be used as working mixtures for a 3D printer. Using mathematical planning of experiments, a set of experimental–statistical models was obtained that describes the influence of mixture composition factors including copolymer additive on the most important properties of ash-containing concrete mixtures and concretes for 3D concrete printing … Show more

“…The most common viscosity-modifying agent (VMA) used in digital printing technique is derived from cellulose ether. VMA enhances the compressive strength of the cementitious matrix at a fresh state and controls the deformation of printed layers during printing [103,104]. These admixtures are exploited as nucleating agents, absorbing cement particles and linking them to develop large flocculants, resulting in a restricted flow of fluid layers and increased plastic viscosity and yield stress [105].…”

“…This can cause tearing defects in the final printed layer [59]. The literature shows that the addition of cement content, nano clay [60,61], fiber content [62][63][64][65], silica fume [66,67], and fly ash [68][69][70][71] increases the yield strength of the concrete mix for printing purposes. Still, at the same time, they decrease the extrudability of the printable mix.…”

“…Composite materials first emerged in the middle of the 20th century and are now one of the most important areas of materials and manufacturing technology [1,2]. They are ideal for a variety of applications in the industrial sectors of aerospace, automotive, construction, sports, and bio-medicine, among many others, due to their excellent properties such as being lightweight and corrosion-resistant [3,4].…”
