The aim of this project was to explore the cycle of the pest's development and to evaluate the efficacy of insecticides from the pyrethroid, organophosphate and neonicotinoids groups in controlling Myiopardalis pardalina Bigot in melon plantations under the conditions of Southeast Asia. Three kinds of traps were tested (pheromone, stick and feeding) for monitoring quarantine flies. The application of thiamethoxam/cyhalothrin (A) and chlorpyrifos/cypermethrin (B) in variant A, B, A in dose 0,2; 0,5; 0,2 l/ha was more effective than threefold applications of chlorpyrifos/cypermethrin in variant B, B, B in dose 0,7; 0,7; 0,7 l/ha during the growing season. Among all traps used, the lowest degree of melon damage (8.8%) was noted only for the variant with 10 pheromone traps per hectare, where the crop yield of melon was slightly higher than in the case of the other traps (16.63 t/ha). The combination A, B, A improved the quality of fruit, decreased melon infestation with ovipositor marks and significantly reduced fly population up to 14 days. In-field management of Bactrocera tryoni (Froggatt) and Zeugodacus cucumis (French) (Diptera: Tephritidae) in fruiting vegetable crops has relied almost exclusively on organophosphate cover sprays. Laboratory and semifield trials were performed to compare a number of alternative insecticides for efficacy against these species. A novel semifield method was used whereby the insecticides were applied to crops as cover sprays under field conditions, and treated plants bearing fruit were transferred to large cages and exposed to fruit flies. Efficacy was assessed in terms of numbers of pupae developing from treated fruit. A laboratory cage method was also used to assess effects on adult mortality and comparative effects of 1-and 3-d-aged residues. The neonicotinoids clothianidin and thiacloprid were very effective against B. tryoni and Z. cucumis. Clothianidin was the only insecticide other than dimethoate to affect adult mortality. The synthetic pyrethroid alpha-cypermethrin was also very effective, particularly in semifield trials, although higher incidence of aphid and whitefly infestation was observed in this treatment compared to others. Cyantraniliprole was effective against B. tryoni, but less effective against Z. cucumis. Imidacloprid, bifenthrin, spinetoram, and abamectin were all relatively less effective, although all demonstrated a suppressive effect.

Oriental fruit fly (Bactrocera dorsalis Hendel) is one of the most damaging insect pests of chili plants causing yield loss up to 90% in Indonesia. Chili growers apply insecticides so heavily that the pest has been reported resistant to insecticides in many places. Safer but more effective alternative control measures must be sought and developed. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of nylon net cage in protecting chili plants from the fruit fly attack. The study was conducted at the Experimental Farm of the Faculty of Agriculture, Hasanuddin University, Makassar, from January to June 2018. This experiment consisted of three treatments: plants caged with nylon net, plants sprayed weekly with insecticide, and unsprayed and uncaged plants (control plants). Treatments were arranged in a complete randomized block design with three replications and each replication consisted of four chili plants. The results showed that the use of nylon net cage provided a total protection, 0% fruit damaged by the fruit fly. In contrast, the plants sprayed with insecticide and control plants suffered fruit damage of 29.1 and 37.5%, respectively. Therefore, nylon net was effective but weekly insecticide spray was not effective in protecting the plants from the fruit fly attack.
