Effectiveness of Topical Anesthetics in Pain Management for Dermal Injuries: A Systematic Review

Abstract: The treatment of dermal injuries is associated with pain in both adult and pediatric populations. We reviewed traditional treatments for controlling the pain of these lesions, such as infiltrated local anesthetics and topical local anesthetics. The objective of this review was to elucidate the efficacy of topical anesthetics in reducing the pain of dermal injuries, as well as the efficacy of topical anesthetics versus other anesthetics, or versus a placebo. Methodology: a systematic review was carried out by s… Show more

“…In light of this, lessening or eliminating pain is a crucial aspect of burns management, especially with it being proved that pain can negatively affect mental health and quality of life and also induce a delay on wound healing [ 5 , 10 , 11 , 12 ]. In comparison with infiltration anesthesia and placebos, topical anesthesia offers an effective and safe way to improve the management of pain [ 13 ]. In this respect, local anesthetics with prolonged action have been investigated for pain relief in burns, under different formulations, from liposomes and microspheres to micro-needles and solid drug delivery matrices [ 14 ].…”
