Effects and safety of mechanical bathing as a complementary therapy for terminal stage cancer patients from the physiological and psychological perspective: a pilot study

“…Bathing in the hot springs and mineral springs facilitates direct adsorption of minerals, such as calcium, chlorine, fluorine, iron, magnesium, potassium, silicon dioxide, sodium, and sulfur through the skin, which in turn can treat skin conditions such as atopic dermatitis and psoriasis [66][67][68]. Sulfurous mineral waters have been long used in the MH for treating numerous diseases, and recent studies and clinical trials are showing benefits of topical application of sulfurous mineral waters and sulfurous muds (peloids) for hand and knee osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, skin diseases, chronic inflammatory diseases, and alleviating anxiety in the patients with chronic diseases such as terminal stage cancer [36,47,52,53]. The beneficial effect of such waters and muds (peliods) is mainly due to the presence of sulfur in the form of hydrogen sulfide (H 2 S), which is formed naturally from organic decomposition.…”
