Effects of 17-Hydroxy-Corticosterone (“Compound F”) in Man 12

Abstract: Itis not yet established whether the adrenal cortex normally secretes several hormones or just one hormone with different actions. The results of studies on adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) (1-3) have on the whole been consistent with the hypothesis that the cortex produces three types of hormone: one affecting carbohydrate metabolism ("sugar" or "S" hormone), one affecting sodium and potassium metabolism ("salt" or "Na" hormone) and one with somatotropic and androgenic properties ("nitrogen" or "androgenic"… Show more

“…The failure to increase significantly the excretion of reducing steroids, to develop a negative N balance, or to show a large and sustained fall of circulating eosinophils is an indication that the output of "carbohydrate-active" steroids 8 ("sugar" hormone) following ACTH is markedly subnormal. The failure to develop transient K diuresis is an indication that the output of either "carbohydrate-active" or "salt-retaining" steroids or both is subnormal-if, indeed, these are separate hormones (20). The failure to develop Na and Cl retention is an indication that the output of "salt-retaining" steroids is similarly impaired.…”

“…Desoxycorticosterone glucoside apparently had a similar effect on ICF composition (Figure 11), but since 17-hydroxycorticosterone, a substance with sugar hormone activity, also had this effect (21), there is no need to postulate that a separate desoxycorticosterone-like substance is liberated with ACTH. f) Body weight and water balance As reported elsewhere (13) one may pro-rate the changes in body weight contributed by protoplasm, extracellular fluid, and intracellular fluid by constructing "theoretical weight curves" in which the actual fluctuations are plotted against the theoretical fluctuations expected from the N, Na and K balances.…”

“…The major steroid in question was hydrocortisone which was developed some 60 years ago (Fourman et al, 1950). Delivery of agents to the skin has been documented by the Egyptians (BC), the Romans (AD) and in mediaeval times when 'flying ointment' was recorded .…”
