Effects of 30 days of creatine ingestion in older men

Abstract: In this investigation we evaluated the effects of oral creatine (Cr) supplementation on body composition, strength of the elbow flexors, and fatigue of the knee extensors in 20 males aged 60-82 years who were randomly administered Cr or placebo (P) in a double-blind fashion. Subjects ingested either 20 g of Cr or P for 10 days, followed by either 4 g of Cr or P, respectively, for 20 days. Tests were conducted pre-supplementation and following 10 and 30 days of supplementation. Leg fatigue was determined using … Show more

“…This assumption is supported by other investigations in older men, where only a small or no increase in body mass was reported after creatine supplementation. 32,33 A SCI leads to a muscle atrophy particularly in the paralysed limbs but also in the lower trunk, depending on lesion level. Thus, the decreased total muscle mass of SCI compared to able-bodied athletes possibly impedes weight gain after creatine supplementation due to lower net creatine retention in total.…”

“…The most peculiar discovery was an improvement in fatigue resistance, which has been shown in many different studies using different exercise test [52,[66][67][68][69][70]. Some investigators have reported an increase in strength [68,69], but this has not always been demonstrated [66,67]. Importantly, in subsequent publications, researchers have begun to evaluate the performance of activities of daily living (activity daily living, ADL) and have shown that creatine supplementation may improve the performance of daily tasks identified in the ADL scale [69,71,72].…”

“…Although Rawson et al (2002) have reported the presence of increased creatine in the blood of elderly subjects (elderly 68.5 mol/l, young 34.9 mol/l) [55], showed no decrease in the activity of creatine after creatine ingestion in older men and women [65]. The most peculiar discovery was an improvement in fatigue resistance, which has been shown in many different studies using different exercise test [52,[66][67][68][69][70].
