Effects of a Carbohydrate-Protein Beverage on Cycling Endurance and Muscle Damage

Abstract: A carbohydrate beverage with additional protein calories produced significant improvements in time to fatigue and reductions in muscle damage in endurance athletes. Further research is necessary to determine whether these effects were the result of higher total caloric content of the CHO+P beverage or due to specific protein-mediated mechanisms.

“…The placebo group received an electrolyte and artificial sweetener solution and the CHO-PRO group received a 6.2% carbohydrate-1.5% protein solution (both provided by Pacific Health Laboratories Inc., Woodbridge, NJ). The CHO-PRO supplement was selected because it had previously been found to improve endurance performance and reduce muscle damage during endurance exercise (14,28). Sixteen subjects received the placebo and 18 subjects received the CHO-PRO drink.…”

“…Recent work, however, suggests that these original nutritional guidelines may need to be adjusted. In the past five years, evidence has accumulated suggesting that endurance performance can be further enhanced by consuming a carbohydrate and protein (CHO-PRO) supplement compared to a carbohydrate-only supplement (14,28).…”

“…According to Saunders et al 1 , by matching a carbohydrate portion, differences in recovery can be attributed to anything other than the absolute carbohydrate content of the supplements. So, a limitation from many studies is that the increased availability of total calories Apparently, when total calories are controlled, the proposed beneficial effects of the added protein are not fully supported 20 .…”

“…It should be noted that CHO+PRO group received a 4:1 ratio of carbohydrate to protein supplementation as it has already been tested in other studies 1,7,11,12,14,20,22,31,32 . However, more recent studies have tested the 3:1 ratio, i.e., a larger amount of PRO in relation to CHO 18,19,33,34 .…”
