Effects of a Combined High-Intensity Interval Training and Resistance Training Program in Patients Awaiting Bariatric Surgery: A Pilot Study

Abstract: Bariatric surgery (BS) is considered the most effective treatment for morbid obesity. Preoperative body weight is directly associated with a higher surgical morbimortality and physical activity could be effective in the preparation of patients. The aim of this study is to determine the effects of a six-month exercise training program (ETP), combining high-intensity interval training (HIIT) and resistance training in patients awaiting BS. Six candidates awaiting BS (38.78 ± 1.18 kg·m−2; 38.17 ± 12.06 years) wer… Show more

“…In four studies, 15 , 19 , 40 , 49 exercise training started during the second postoperative year and inclusion spread over several months. Aerobic training was performed in six (27%) studies, 17 , 19 , 26 , 36 , 40 , 47 resistance training in three (14%) studies, 20 , 45 , 48 a combination of aerobic and resistance training in 12 (54%) studies, 15 , 16 , 17 , 18 , 27 , 37 , 41 , 42 , 43 , 44 , 49 , 50 and balance training in one (5%) study. 46 In two preoperative programs, aerobic training incorporated periods of HIIT.…”

“…The CT benefits in patients with MetS have been previously shown [ 34 ]. Barnes et al [ 35 ] reported a WC reduction (19.6 cm) in patients with obstructive sleep apnoea (i.e., PSQ) after a 16-week CT programme (endurance and RT), but this intervention included a higher volume of exercise training per week compared with the present study.…”
