Effects of a convenience drink fortified withn-3 fatty acids on then-3 index

Abstract: There is strong evidence that the intake of EPA and DHA reduces the risk of adverse cardiac events. Fish and fish oil capsules are not necessarily an ideal source of EPA and DHA for every individual. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effect of a convenience drink enriched with 500 mg EPA and DHA on then-3 index, a biomarker of EPA and DHA status in an individual. Of the 190 subjects with atherosclerotic disease screened between February and June 2009, 50 were recruited based on ann-3 index < … Show more

“…A lower bioavailability translates into a lower biological activity . Moreover, large differences exist in absorption of EPA + DHA from individual to individual, even if an identical dose of a chemical form is taken in an identical matrix, in this case 940 mg EPA + DHA from salmon oil (triglyceride) in 200 ml of a drink www.frontiersin.org (Köhler et al, 2010). Both phenomena impact negatively on the differentiation between intervention and control groups in terms of dose of EPA + DHA absorbed.…”

“…Erythrocyte fatty acid composition was analyzed according to the HS-Omega-3 Index(R) methodology as previously described [27]. Fatty acid methyl esters were generated from erythrocytes by acid transesterification and analyzed by gas chromatography using a GC2010 Gas Chromatograph (Shimadzu, Duisburg, Germany) equipped with a SP2560, 100-meter column (Supelco, Bellefonte, Pa., USA) using hydrogen as carrier gas.…”

“…In our laboratory, we have standardized all stages of the analytical procedure and used them in a variety of published studies [20, 25••, 26, 27]. An identical methodology is in place at laboratories in Munich [28] and Seoul [13].…”
