Effects of a slow-release coated urea product on growth performance and ruminal fermentation in beef steers

Abstract: The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of a slow-release coated urea product (CU, 1% as dry matter of diet) on ruminal disappearance and fermentation, as well as on growth performance of beef steers. Soybean meal in control diet was replaced by CU and steam-rolled corn. For the growth performance trial, 20 beef steers (330±20 kg) were used. For the ruminal trial, four ruminally cannulated steers (230±20 kg) were used. Dry matter intake, daily gain, feed efficiency and carcass dre… Show more

“…Similar to previous reports (Pinos-Rodríguez et al 2010;Holland & Jennings 2011), there were no effects of U combination on carcass characteristics. As the S:ADF ratio increased, carcass weight and LM area were increased linearly.…”

“…U combination did not affect (P = 0.96) ADG, but tended to reduce DMI (5.1%, P = 0.06), and reduced DMI expressed as a percentage of live weight (5.8%, P = 0.02). In a few studies, the absence of effects on feed intake of the combination of U plus SRU products has been observed previously in steers fed a finishing diet (Tedeschi et al 2002;Pinos-Rodríguez et al 2010;Castañeda-Serrano et al 2013). However, a tendency for reduction in DMI has been observed in steers fed diets containing 2.25% of a solution of SRU product based on calcium bond U (Duff et al 2000).…”

“…Uma solução alternativa para a utilização da ureia na alimentação animal seria modificar sua taxa de liberação de N, fazendo com que fosse retardada, tornando-se mais sincronizada com a digestão dos carboidratos (PINOS-RODRÍGUEZ et al, 2010).…”

No entanto, as concentrações de N-NH 3 nos tratamento com ureia de liberação lenta e com proteína isolada de soja continuou declinando.…”
