Frequent floods and droughts, which cause significant material and intangible losses, are a result of watershed destruction especially in Central Sulawesi. Flash floods have been a common occurrence in portions of Central Sulawesi in recent years, and Miu Sub-watershed is one of those watersheds. Both the material and non-material effects were fairly significant, especially for the local population. The biophysical conditions of the area must be known in order to identify flood target areas and flood causes. The application of Geographic Information Systems is the technique used to assess floods. This study’s objective is a spatial examination of the Miu sub-watershed flood susceptibility. Flood-prone areas are analyzed using a variety of techniques, including overlaying, categorization, scoring, weighting, and modeling. The three types of flood danger classes are non-prone, medium, and prone. The Miu sub-watershed region has an area with a flood hazard class for the non-prone category of 64,255.173 ha, a medium category of 57,909.003 ha, and a vulnerable category of 4,838.917 ha. Bangga Village in Dolo Selatan Sub-district, Tuva Village in Gumbasa Sub-district, and Bolapapu Village in Kulawi Sub-district are the Miu Das regions with the widest category of high flood threat.

Water-conservation enhancement is a crucial objective of regional ecological restoration projects in arid and semiarid areas, and it is significantly influenced by land use/cover change (LUCC). The Grain for Green Project (GFGP) is a common strategy for ecological restoration. However, insufficient attention has been paid to the impact of reforestation patterns and the underlying surface characteristics on the effectiveness of GFGP in enhancing water conservation. In this study, a Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) scenario-based simulation was conducted to assess changes in water-conservation depth (WCD) in the Zhangjiakou section of the Guanting Reservoir basin. Redundancy analysis (RDA) and a mixed linear model were employed to determine the effects of different reforestation patterns and their underlying slope gradient and soil-type characteristics on WCD variation. The results showed that there were differences in the effect characteristics of reforestation patterns and different vegetation types on WCD changes; the effectiveness of increased water conservation is associated with the adaptation of reforestation plants to underlying characteristics. Returning farmland to evergreen forests was the most effective approach, leading to a relative increase in WCD that was 2.6 times greater than the relative increase in total WCD. WCD decreased with the slope gradient, with WCD decreasing by 0.2 mm for every 1° increase in slope. Converting grassland to evergreen forests on slopes greater than 16.19° and converting deciduous forests to grassland on slopes less than 16.19° would further increase WCD, promoting the synergistic development of ecosystem services. This study provides insights into the development of more efficient reforestation strategies to enhance water conservation in a complex terrain area.

China, with notable population blooming and economic development in the last decades, has experienced profound land-use changes, which, in turn, dramatically impacted the regional, even global and environment system. However, characteristics of land-use changes in China have not yet been well addressed, especially around the year 2000 when a series of land policies were put forward, such as the project of “returning farmland to forest”. To fill this gap, this paper investigated the temporal and spatial patterns of land use changes in China for the period from 1987 to 2010, by taking advantage of the continually updated China Land Use Database developed from remote sensing images. The land-use dynamic matrix, zonal model, and transition matrix were employed to characterize land-use change patterns for four time intervals (1987–1995, 1995–2000, 2000–2005, and 2005–2010) on the dimensions of conversion and modification. Results showed that land-use change affected 4 × 105 km2 (4.5%) of the total landscape in China for more than the past twenty years. Of the six land-use types, built-up land experienced the largest net increase by almost 30% (52,434 km2), with the rate of expansion accelerating after 1995. The area of cropland increased before 2000 and declined afterwards, ending with a net increase in 14,280 km2, approximately 1% of its original area. The loss in the eastern coastal region is attributed mainly to built-up land expansion, while the gain in northern China, with the price of grassland and woodland shrinking, reshaped the cropland distribution in China. The area of woodland decreased slightly by 7880 km2 without a clear pattern over time. The modification of woodland indicated an intensive forest management in terms of planting fast-growing trees in the south of China. Grassland continues to shrink at a decreasing rate, and the modification of grassland shows a tendency of transformation from sparse grassland into a dense one in the 21st century. Trade-offs among demands on food security, economic development, and environment protection forced and shaped the contemporary land-use change in China. These results contribute to understanding the trends and causes of land use change in China, which could provide underpinning knowledge for assessing environmental change, and provide insights on future land planning.
