Effects of age and gender on the relationship between anxiety and coronary artery disease.

Abstract: This study investigated the relationship between anxiety and coronary artery disease (CAD). State (S-ANX) and trait (T-ANX) anxiety were assessed with the State-Trait Personality Inventory (STPI), which was administered to 373 patients (230 males, 143 females) 12 to 18 hr prior to their undergoing coronary arteriography. Females were significantly higher than males in both T-ANX (p less than 0.05) and S-ANX (p less than 0.01). Younger patients of both sexes were significantly higher in S-ANX (p less than 0.001… Show more

“…Anxious patients are more likely to complain about symptoms of angina pectoris, receive more coronary angiographies and, as a result, more revascularizations are carried out [28,29] . These behaviors might lead to a better outcome for these patients in terms of preventing a recurrence of myocardial infarction or cardiac death, supporting the theory that anxiety plays a protective role for patients with CAD [17] .…”

“…The trait anxiety items on the STPI have correlations ranging from 0.93 to 0.96 with the STAI items. 32 The trait anxiety and trait anger questions on the STPI assessed how study participants generally felt since the previous assessment, and in the case of the first trimester assessment, how they had felt since becoming pregnant.…”

“…Furthermore, anxious patients may be more inclined to receive additional examinations, for example they are more likely to receive coronary angiography even in the presence of less severe or insignificant coronary disease. This could facilitate earlier diagnosis and initiation of adequate treatment and counteract the effect of depression (Schocken et al, 1987;Hermann et al, 2000).…”
